The course

Cybersecurity and Hacking

Discover the summer course in cybersecurity and hacking dedicated to high school students (starting in their second year) to understand and develop the hacker mentality to then be able to block cyber attacks: understand how technologies work to exploit them in ways that the authors themselves had not foreseen.

Thanks to the experience of the professors at the Polytechnic University of Milan, an innovative cybersecurity and hacking course for students is born at the Polytechnic, branded TECHCAMP.

Why take a cybersecurity and hacking course?

The world around us is pervaded by technology, especially information technology. The systems we use daily, upon which we depend, are complex, and it's difficult to make them function properly. Furthermore, extremely powerful and versatile systems are often underutilized or lack untapped potential.

Contrary to what is often portrayed in the media, hacking is the ability (and art) of making technological (and non-technological) systems do things they were not intended to do; in a certain sense, the ability to understand them "better" than those who designed them.

Successfully hacking complex systems requires two essential elements: a deep and passionate understanding of technology, and the ability to think creatively and outside the box. Understanding how to hack such systems is the first step in learning how to protect them with cybersecurity techniques.

Specifically, in this course, we'll look at examples related to system and application security. It's common in modern systems that small errors or oversights can become major and difficult-to-manage security problems. Together, we'll look at practical examples of these errors and how, with the right mindset, it's possible to understand the true implications of these problems.

Securing systems is a complex undertaking: it not only requires risk and cost analysis, but above all, understanding the potential threats. Understanding how and which errors cause the greatest damage is therefore essential to focusing and optimizing efforts to address the most serious issues.

Course topics:

  • Introduction to the technologies used for the web
  • Read and understand applications written by others (reverse engineering).
  • Vulnerabilità di servizi Web
  • Introduction to Cryptography

Like all TECHCAMP summer courses, the approach effectively combines theory and practice to provide a true STEM experience (a term used to indicate scientific-technological disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the various related courses of study).

Technical requirements

To participate in the course, you are required to bring the following materials:
A laptop. Anyone who owns an iPad (models released from 2018 onwards) is invited to bring it so that we can use one of the motion analysis software. The installed operating system does not matter, but the Office package is required. The software packages used in the course will be installed by the instructor during the afternoon exercises.
A mouse (recommended to facilitate interaction with the software that will be used).
